Audience Strategy

I intended for the audience of this visual essay to be any high school system, whether public or private, that refuses to give sex-education or gives an unhealthy form of it; whether this is though preaching abstinence, excluding LGBTQ+ students from the conversation, excusing rape, etc. By creating a visual that presents a more direct message, it captures attention without questions and drives the message smoothly.

While this essay should bring rise to open conversation and pondering, a big statement within the paper is how determined I am to remove old methods of teaching sex-ed. If the piece allows for conversation, it still can spawn a disagreement. So while there is subtle room to disagree with the “request” type title, the facts listed within the essay cut off the potential debate.

In terms of genre, by presenting the visual essay in a public space, such as a community center, or even a bulletin board at a public school, the message can be spread to adults as well as students. If students advocate for the improvement of their own education, it could stir the media at a faster pace, raising awareness efficiently. While adults might simply roll their eyes at the concept discussed in the essay, having the concept be presented as an issue will already be a step in the direction of having conversations and facing the reality of how unhealthy sex-eductaion already is.
